Join LightHouse in celebrating National Nutrition Month and increasing awareness of the nation’s food and nutrition experts

National Nutrition Month was designed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating habits. “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right” is the theme for 2014. This year’s key messages for National Nutrition Month focus on how to combine taste and nutrition to create healthy meals.

On Wednesday, March 12, 2014, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day increases awareness of the nation’s food and nutrition experts.  While anyone may call themselves a nutritionist, only a registered dietician (RD) or registered dietician nutritionist (RDN) holds a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college, passes a rigorous national certification exam, and completes an extensive supervised program at a health care facility. We would like to recognize/celebrate our own Susan Hempen, LightHouse’s nutrition expert!  Susan has been a registered dietitian for 18 years, while recognizing the important relationship between diet and physical activity, she also earned her certification as a personal trainer in 2010.

Susan works with LightHouse patients having various dietary needs including diabetes, heart failure, weight loss, wound healing, kidney disease and other diet related conditions.  Susan also serves as a consultative resource to the entire LightHouse clinical team.

In an effort to support the seniors in our community, Susan Hempen presents nutrition educational programs on topics such as Diet and Diabetes. If you would like more information about this or another program that LightHouse offers, please contact wsutton@lhihome.com or 703-550-1400.
